The Coral Bank Of Western Australia
By building a cache of genetic material, we’re creating an insurance policy for WA’s corals.
Conserving WA’s unique coral species
The Coral Bank of Western Australia is located on-site at AQWA and is a living catalogue of corals native to Western Australia. The aim of this coral bank is to conserve WA’s unique coral species, preserve the biodiversity of our reef systems, and in turn safeguard our oceans for the future.
How does our coral bank work?
By building a cache of genetic material, we’re creating an insurance policy for WA’s corals. Hard corals don’t have a set life expectancy like most animals. When kept in ideal conditions, like here in our controlled bank, they can live for hundreds of years! If a colony outgrows the bank, it can be relocated and its own fragments used to replace its position in the catalogue. This living repository ensures the survival of each coral species and provides for the possibility of restoration to damaged reefs in the wild.
