It's time to get career curious about marine! Gain insider knowledge into the day-to-day experiences and duties of career aquarists, marine scientists & tour guides with AQWA's new marine science & tourism Career Taster Program (CTP). This program is designed to cater to both career curious year 9 students interested in working in aquaculture, environmental science or marine tourism fields, and to year 10-12 students enrolled in marine science subjects.

What to Expect

This 5 hours Career Taster Program is suitable for Year 9 – 12 students on their journey of exploring careers and real workplaces. It is sure to inspire those who have shown an interest in marine science, aquaculture, zoology, tourism and more.

Includes a fully guided and tailored program of experiences, presentations & hands-on activities with career marine specialists; plus lunch and standard entry to AQWA. Students will garner insights into the roles, requirements, challenges and the joys of working alongside animals & the public, within a major aquarium and tourist attraction.

Program Itinerary

  • This program Itinerary is for planning purposes and is subject to change based on student numbers and/or may be adjusted upon request:
  • Arrival - check in at Reception from 9am, deposit your 10c containers (if applicable)
  • Greeting - Ocean Guide greeting and briefing of the day
  • 10.15am - Microplastic Sampling at Sorrento Beach (whole group)
  • 11.00am - Morning Tea break, split in to groups (9 per group)
  • 11.30am - Activity Rotations
  • - Behind the scenes tour of Coral Conservatory
  • - Glass Bottom Boat Tour
  • - Fish feed & water testing
  • 12.30pm - Lunch break, self-guided exploration of AQWA's exhibit areas
  • Assemble - Turtle Rescue Centre (outside terrace) - gather students at least 5 minutes prior to your activity start time, to meet your Ocean Guide.
  • 1.30pm - Turtle Talk and Feed - Meet an Ocean Guide as they deliver a public presentation while feeding our rescue turtle/s.
  • 1.30pm - Turtle Research Workshop
  • 2.15pm - Final questions, Teacher handover, Guide farewell.
  • Depart - at teachers discretion

Itinerary

  • AQWA Entry for each student to all public exhibits
  • Free of charge Entry for teachers/supervising adults, as per year group ratios
  • Briefing by an Ocean Guide
  • 4 - 5 hour fully guided program, including glass bottom boat ride for each student*
  • Lunch for each student
  • Free bus parking & 4 hour car parking
  • Free Child return pass for each student, exclusively for schools who participate in Bring 3 For The Sea initiative (see below)

Available during WA school term, by request.

You can arrive for your Excursion from 9am; your full day program commences at 10.00am and concludes at 2.15pm. Please note students should be assembled and ready to meet your Ocean Guide prior to this start time.

Students

Years 9 – 12 students only

There is a minimum of 6 students and maximum of 27 students to book this package.

If more than 9 students, excursion group will split into Groups A, B & C (up to 9 students each group) for activities.

Teachers and Helpers:

At least one supervisory teacher is required to remain with the non-guided group in the AQWA exhibit areas during group rotations.

Teachers and Helpers do not receive lunch or glass bottom boat ride.

AQWA Excursions include free of charge Teachers and supervisory Helpers at the following year-group ratios:

  • Years K to 2 – 1 FOC : 5 Students
  • Years 3 to 12 – 1 FOC : 10 Students
  • Education Support Staff – 1 FOC : 1 Student
  • Additional Supervisory Teachers/Helpers: available at current Concession rate.

Before Your Excursion

Bring 3 For The Sea initiative:

Get students excited for their excursion by involving them in our Bring 3 For the Sea initiative! 

  • AQWA has teamed up with Containers for Change and we are asking every student and visitor to bring three 10c marked containers with them to donate to the AQWA Foundation.
  • This small challenge will support AQWA Foundation’s turtle rehabilitation program AND reduce plastics in the ocean and in landfill. 
  • Simply have each student bring 3 eligible containers to donate during your excursion.
  • Participating schools receive a free Child Return Pass for each Student and can receive a Certificate of Acknowledgement for helping the AQWA Foundation!
  • When you book an AQWA excursion, you can request we post out a free Containers for Change collection bag to start gathering your containers before you visit.
