Excursion Program: Snorkel, Explore & More (Full Day)

Access restricted areas, discover the inner workings of an aquarium, learn shark biology then SWIM with them! It's the ultimate day at AQWA for marine and maritime studies students and any budding biologists! This full day program for secondary students includes snorkelling in Australia's largest aquarium; behind the scenes tour; shark biology presentation; guided talks; lunch and standard entry to AQWA.

Need to Know / Planning

Who

Years 7 – 12 students only.

Participating students must not suffer from known heart conditions, epilepsy or asthma and must be capable swimmers (guardian waiver required).

When

Tuesdays during WA school term, by request.

Arrive from 9am. Students should be assembled and ready to meet their Ocean Guide for a 9.15am start. Need a later start? Please request in the Special Requests section of the booking process.

Minimum: 6

Maximum: 18

Teachers: 1 free per 5 students. Teachers will NOT participate in snorkel experience.

If more than 9 students, excursion group will split into Group A and Group B (up to 9 students each group) for activities.

Students will snorkel in groups of 1x AQWA Instructor and 3x Students.

Length

Guided portion of excursion (including snorkel experience) has a duration of approx. 3-4 hours, depending on student numbers.

Remaining excursion time is self-guided and teacher directed. Depart at leisure.

9.00-9.15am – Arrival and check-in at Reception

9.15am – Greeting and itinerary outline by Ocean Guide

9.25am – Explore AQWA (self guided)

10.00am – Touch Pool Talk & Feed

10.15amGroup A: Behind The Scenes Tour. Group B: Morning Tea (not included)

10.30am – Turtle Rescue Centre Talk & Feed

10.45amGroup B: Behind The Scenes Tour. Group A: Morning Tea (not included)

11.00am – Shark Biology Presentation & an introduction to AQWA’s shark species

11.30am – Snorkel safety brief (all students briefed at once)

12.00pm – 12.45pm –  Group A: Snorkel Experience. Group B: Lunch then spectate from tunnel.

12.45pm – 1.30pm – Group B: Snorkel Experience. Group A: Lunch then spectate from tunnel.

1.45pm – Regroup. Teacher handover, time for focused exploration of exhibits relevant to study. Chance to complete worksheets or take field notes.

2.00pm – Program concludes. Depart at teacher’s discretion.

Before Your Excursion

Be Prepared:

  • Please download our External Provider Pack (above) to become familiar with AQWA’s arrival, departure and emergency procedures, as well as expectations of student behaviour and teacher supervisory recommendations.

Get Involved:

  • Get students excited for their excursion and engage with the cross-curriculum priority of Sustainability by involving them in our Bring 3 For the Sea initiative! 
  • AQWA has teamed up with Containers for Change and we are asking every student and visitor to bring three 10c marked containers with them to donate to the AQWA Foundation.
  • This small challenge will support AQWA Foundation’s turtle rehabilitation program AND reduce plastics in the ocean and in landfill. 
  • Simply have each student bring 3 eligible containers to donate during your excursion.
  • Participating schools can receive a Certificate of Acknowledgement for helping the AQWA Foundation!
  • When you book an AQWA excursion, you can request we post out a Containers for Change collection bag to start gathering your containers before you visit.
