Before Your Excursion

Before you arrive, please discuss the following with your Educators:

Supervisory Requests:

Active Supervision

  • The supervisory team must accompany children throughout the Excursion at all times and monitor behaviour to meet expectations (see below).
  • AQWA staff will not undertake any supervisory role, however they will intervene where visitor behaviour or activities put animals, displays and/or visitors at any risk.
  • Special attention is required at the Touch Pool (see below)

Small Groups

  • AQWA expects Excursion Groups to divide into smaller groups and split up to explore, with a dedicated Educator/Leader for each group.
  • AQWA can be very busy during school holidays – we recommend using an identifying vest, bib or shirt so you can easily monitor your group. Complete head-counts regularly.

Separated Children

  • Prior to exploring, discuss your action plan with Educators and Children, should a child become separated from the group.
    • Ensure your Children know if they should “Stop & Stay” or go to a predetermined Meeting Point within AQWA.
  • Should a child become separated from the group, please have an Educator inform AQWA Reception immediately. The team can issue a PA alert and assist in locating them.

Behaviour Expectations:

For the health and safety of our animals and all visitors, please note the following conditions of entry and discuss these with your group prior to exploring:

Throughout AQWA:

  • Shoes must be worn at all times.
  • Personal items cannot be left unattended/placed on the ground (except in dedicated storage spaces).
  • No running and no climbing on barriers, handrails or exhibit elevations.

Caring for Our Animals & Exhibits:

  • Please DO NOT place your hands in exhibits/pools that are open, except for at the dedicated Touch Pool (see below and check your map). Some animals have spikes, sharp teeth and venomous skin!
  • Fish have ears! They can hear three times louder than us, so please talk quietly and don’t yell.
  • When at AQWA, please don’t tap the glass! Fish and sharks have a line of special sensory cells along their body called a lateral-line. These cells sense vibrations! Our animals will feel the vibrations if you tap, and they may hide out of view!

At The Touch Pool:

  • The animals in the dedicated Touch Pool are safe to touch
  • Keep all animals underwater, at all times. This is how they breathe!
  • Touch all animals gently, using soft, flat fingers to pat – but don’t poke, squeeze or grab!
  • If it’s feeding time, listen to your Ocean Guide and keep hands out of the water until the feed is over.
