STRANDED SEAL SPENDS NEW YEAR AT AQWA
13 December 2003
A New Zealand Fur Seal pup (Arctocephlalus fosteri) will be spending the start of 2004 in the care of AQWA after being found washed up on Sorrento Beach recently.
The male seal, aged around ten months old, was found in an emaciated condition with a cataract on its right eye and a number of cuts and abrasions. It was brought to AQWA's rehabilitation facility by Conservation and Land Management.
Gloria Jackson, Head of Marine Mammals at AQWA, said that the treatment of the seal has been very challenging as it is a real character.
“He is not easy to feed, feisty and stubborn. However, AQWA's Marine Mammal Team relishes the challenge of bringing the seal back to good health. We'll make sure that this little seal enjoys its time at AQWA,” she said.
Although New Zealand Fur Seals are found further south of Perth, it is unusual to find them on local beaches; this seal being only the second of the species cared for by AQWA in over fourteen years.
