Stranded seal pup given second chance
3 November 2003
A young Sub Antarctic fur seal ( Arctocephalus tropicalis ) found stranded on a beach in Mandurah last month, is on the road to recovery after being cared for at AQWA – The Aquarium of Western Australia.
The small female seal - named T-24 - was brought to AQWA's rehabilitation facility by Conservation and Land Management after being found in a severely emaciated condition. T-24 also had an injury to her flipper and a curvature in her spine.
AQWA's Head of Marine Mammals, Gloria Jackson, said that the first stage in the seal's care was to get her rehydrated and eating again, which T-24 has responded to very well.
“So far she is making wonderful progress,” said Ms Jackson.
The seal will remain in the care of AQWA until she is assessed to be healthy and strong enough to be returned to the wild.
“We've privileged to once again give an animal a second chance at survival,” Ms Jackson said.
