HMAS WESTRALIA CREW
SEE LIFE UNDER THE OCEAN
9 July 2003
Eighty four navy personnel from HMAS Westralia and their families will be seeing a different view of the ocean when they take up an invitation from AQWA - the Aquarium of Western Australia - to visit on Friday 11 July.
The invitation is a show of appreciation from AQWA to the crew of the ship to thank them for their assistance in relocating thirteen loggerhead turtles from Perth to Broome in January.
The turtles had been washed up on Perth beaches and their carriage aboard the ship to warmer waters - in a temporary swimming pool - would have significantly increased their chances of survival.
During their visit to AQWA, some of the crew will be given the opportunity to dive with the sharks in the main aquarium. One of the divers, Petty Officer Clarke said he was excited about visiting AQWA and his dive.
"It's great that we have contributed to the survival of the turtles. I hope they return the favour and contribute to my survival in the shark tank!"
Mike Reid, AQWA's Facility Manager said that AQWA is looking forward to welcoming the Navy.
"We hope this visit will help continue to build the good relationship between us."
